Maran the Baal Chavos Daas and Nesivos HaMishpot — Chiddushim in His Ksav Yad Kodsho from Beis Yaakov, with Variations from the Printed Edition A leaf in the ksav yad kodsho of Rabban Shel Yisroel, Rabbi Yaakov Lorberbaum of Lissa, Baal Chavos Daas, and Nesivos HaMishpot. Chiddushim from his sefer Beis Yaakov (Horbishov, 1823), on Maseches Kesubos (Kesubos 9a). Written on both sides of a single leaf. The manuscript before us preserves the gaon's chiddushim with several variations from the text as it ultimately appeared in print, apparently representing a mahadura kama penned by the gaon prior to sending the sefer to the press. Rabban Shel Yisroel, Rabbi Yaakov Lorberbaum, Baal Chavos Daas (1770–1832), was among the greatest poskim to arise in Klal Yisroel, and his words are cited countless times throughout the seforim of the poskim. In his younger years, the gaon served as Rav of Monastyryska, and later as Rav of Kalish in Galicia, where he authored his renowned works Chavos Daas, Mekor Chaim, Nesivos HaMishpot (Part I), and others. The fame of the mechaber spread throughout the Torah world, until in 1809 the leaders of the kehillah of Lissa sought him to serve as their Rav and leader, writing: ”...We have set our eyes upon the foremost gaon of the generation, the distinguished Rav, author of the sefer Chavos Daas... who, as we have heard, resides in the holy community of Kalish near Lemberg...” (from the original ksav hachtarah). In Lissa he established his permanent home, from where Torah and halachah spread throughout the world. His brilliant seforim earned him everlasting renown, foremost among them Nesivos HaMishpot on Choshen Mishpot, Chavos Daas on Yoreh Deah, and Mekor Chaim on Orach Chaim and Hilchos Pesach.
