Written entirely in his own hand in the German language. These essays were apparently prepared for publication in the journal Yeshurun, in which Rav Hirsch published his Torah hashkafah and guidance over many years, presenting the eternal values of the Torah in the language best understood by the German-speaking Jews of his generation. His classic works Chorev and The Nineteen Letters were likewise originally written in German and only later translated into Lashon HaKodesh. Rav Shamshon Raphael Hirsch (1808–1888), the revered Rav of the Orthodox Kehillah Adas Yeshurun in Frankfurt am Main, was one of the foremost Torah leaders and ba'alei machshavah of nineteenth-century German Jewry, and among the greatest champions in the battle against the Reform movement. His sefarim and essays rescued countless Yidden from the growing influence of the Haskalah and assimilation. In recent decades, his writings have experienced a remarkable revival and are now among the most widely studied works of Jewish thought in the Litvish yeshivah world. The manuscripts before us represent the very writings that stood at the forefront of Rav Hirsch's historic struggle to preserve Torah-true Yiddishkeit. Written in clear, elegant German that spoke directly to the younger generation of his day, these essays inspired countless readers, strengthened faithful Yidden in their commitment to Torah and mitzvos, and helped preserve Orthodox Jewish life in Germany!
