”A Gezunt Un a Gut Yohr, with Good Business and Much Tzufriedenhait” – A Rosh Hashanah Letter from the Wife of the Chafetz Chaim Warm family letter from the rebbetzin of Maran Hagaon HaKadosh the Chafetz Chaim , Mrs. Miriam Freida Kagan , written from Radin on 19 Elul 1937 , in anticipation of Rosh Hashanah . In this heartfelt letter, she thanks the recipient for his generous support, blesses him and his family with a healthy, prosperous New Year, and promises to mention his name at the kever of her husband, the tzaddik, Maran the Chafetz Chaim , where she would daven on his behalf. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • She opens the letter with warm words to her benefactor: ”My esteemed friend, who never forgets to support me with an open hand...” She then blesses him in her warm Yiddish: ”... איך ווינש אייך און אייער גאנצער פאמיליע, א גיזונט און א גוט יאר פון גוטע ביזנעס און צופרידנהייט ...” ”...I wish you and your entire family a gezunt un a gut yohr, with gute business and much tzufriedenhait , together with a kesivah va'chasimah tovah and every blessing...” She continues with heartfelt appreciation for his kindness: ”... און אין זכות וואס איר פארגעסט ניט אָן מיר אין מיין קראנקן און גימאטערטן לעבן, זאל דער אויבערשטער אייך קיינמאל ניט פארגעסן צום גוטן ...” ”...In the zechus that you have not forgotten me throughout my years of illness and hardship, may the Eibershter never forget you for good...” She then promises: ”... איך גיי אלע יארצייט אויפן קבר פון מיין מאן דעם צדיק ז”ל, וועל איך דערמאנען אויך אייער נאמען ...” ”...Every yahrtzeit I go to the kever of my husband, the tzaddik, and I will mention your name there as well, that he should be a guter better before the Ribbono Shel Olam on your behalf...” The letter concludes with her heartfelt thanks for the ten dollars she had just received: ”... פאר וועלכע איך דאנק אייך הערצליך .” • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Mrs. Miriam Freida Kagan , daughter of Rabbi Hillel , Rav of Lapy, married the Chafetz Chaim in 1904. She was the mother of his youngest son, Rabbi Aharon HaKohen Kagan , and of Mrs. Feiga , wife of Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Saks . Many treasured stories, hanhogos, and words of mussar of the Chafetz Chaim have been preserved through the recollections of the rebbetzin.
