”Like a Father's Compassion” – A Heartwarming Family Letter from Rabbi Yehudah Asad to His Son-in-Law and Daughter upon the Birth of a Granddaughter – Serdahely, 1861 Warm and heartfelt family letter from Rabbi Yehudah Asad , author of Yehudah Ya'aleh , to his beloved son-in-law and talmid, Rabbi Aharon Bichler , Rav of Jasberin (Jászberény), Hungary, and to his cherished daughter, Sarah , upon the birth of their daughter. Overflowing with brachos and a father's affection, the letter also conveys greetings and blessings from his wife, who sends a gift for the newborn mother. Written in Yiddish-Deutsch, 1861. Among his warm fatherly words, Rabbi Yehudah writes: ”...My dear daughter, Sarah... Your beloved mother, may she live and be well, is traveling this coming Motza'ei Shabbos, iy”H, to the baths in Piestany. She therefore hastens to send you the enclosed gift in honor of the birth. Please accept this small token with love, rejoice in it, and strengthen yourself. May HaKadosh Baruch Hu bring us only good tidings...” He continues with touching concern for his daughter: ”...Our esteemed daughter, Frimet , sends her warm regards. As for the money you need, please borrow it from your brother-in-law on our account...” The Deep Affection Between Rabbi Yehudah Asad and His Son-in-Law Rabbi Yehudah Asad cherished his distinguished son-in-law, Rabbi Aharon Bichler, who was both his talmid and one of his closest correspondents in Torah. Their letters are filled with discussions in halachah alongside warm inquiries after the welfare of his beloved daughter, whom he repeatedly blessed with every good. The present letter offers a beautiful glimpse into the close and loving bond that united the family. Rabbi Yehudah Asad (1794–1866), author of Yehudah Ya'aleh , was one of the foremost gedolim of Hungary, responding to thousands of she'eilos nearly 900 of which were later printed. He was a distinguished talmid of the Maharam Benet , a close friend of the Chasam Sofer and later of the Kesav Sofer , and served for many years as Rav of Serdahely , where he established generations of talmidim. His Torah was published in Shu”t Yehudah Ya'aleh and other works.
