Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Berlin - Semichah Letter Entirely in His Ksav Yad Kodsho. 1766 Elegant letter, rich in refined expressions and words of praise, granting the title of chaver to Rabbi Yehudah Leib, son of Rabbi Yoel Kirchheim. Entirely in the ksav yad kodsho of the illustrious gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch, Av Beis Din of Berlin and grandson of the Chacham Tzvi ZYA”A. The semichah was written in the year ”V'Ruach Chadashah” (1766). It is possible that Rabbi Yehudah Leib Kirchheim, for whom this semichah was written, was a grandson of Rabbi Elchanan Kirchheim, Baal Simchas HaNefesh, son-in-law of the gaon hakadosh Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Kaidanover, Baal Kav HaYashar ZYA”A. The gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch (Levin) of Berlin (1721–1800) was one of the outstanding gedolim of his generation and the revered Av Beis Din of Berlin. He was the son of Rabbi Aryeh Leib, Av Beis Din of Amsterdam, and son-in-law of the Chacham Tzvi. The gaon belonged to one of the most distinguished rabbinic families of his era. Among his relatives were his maternal uncle, Rabbeinu Yaakov Emden, the Yaavetz; his brother, the gaon Rabbi Aryeh Leib, Baal Binyan Ariel; and his brother-in-law, the gaon Rabbi Shaul, Av Beis Din of The Hague. Among his works are Tzvi LaTzaddik (on Torah, Shas, and responsa), Tzava Rav (on Mishnayos and Shulchan Aruch), and notes to Lechem Shamayim, authored by his uncle, the Yaavetz.
