”He Will Succeed in All His Endeavors” – A Rare Joint Letter from the Sfas Emes of Gur and the Sifsei Tzaddik of Pilica – With a Remarkable Brachah for Success Exceptionally rare joint letter from Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter , the Sfas Emes of Gur, together with his brother-in-law Rabbi Pinchas Menachem Mendel Yustman , the Sifsei Tzaddik of Pilica, appealing on behalf of a chassid in desperate need. In this moving letter, the Sifsei Tzaddik pours out his heart before the wealthy chassid R' Mordechai Araten , pleading that he come to the aid of his daughter and son-in-law, whose situation had become so desperate that he writes of himself, ”I have become ill from overwhelming anguish.” Although it was not his way to make such appeals, he explains that he was compelled to do so because ”it is, chalilah, a matter of pikuach nefesh for them both.” He concludes with heartfelt brachos. The Sfas Emes then adds his own moving appeal in his own ksav yad , joining his brother-in-law's request with words of compassion and blessing: ”...I, too, ask him to have mercy upon his daughter and son-in-law, as a father has compassion upon his children. May Hashem grant that the business prosper from this time onward. Although this year there has been only a small profit from the business, Your Honor must support them, as my brother-in-law has written. And in the zechus of this mitzvah, he will succeed in all his endeavors.” • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter, the Sfas Emes (1847–1905), was one of the towering Torah leaders of Poland and among the foremost luminaries of Chassidus.
