Minchas Shai on Tanach. Mantua, 1742-1744. First Edition Torah, Nevi'im, and Kesuvim with the celebrated commentary Minchas Shai, containing meticulous notes on the mesorah, spelling, vocalization, and the keri and ksiv of Tanach, by the gaon and master of dikduk Rabbi Yedidyah Shlomo Norzi. Mantua, 1742–1744. First edition. The work was completed by the mechaber in 1626, but was not brought to print until many years later in 1740. The gaon Rabbi Yedidyah Shlomo Raphael ben Avraham Norzi (1560-1630), one of the leading rabbonim of Mantua, devoted his life to the clarification of the mesorah and the accurate text of Tanach. His monumental Minchas Shai, first printed posthumously in Mantua, became the accepted authority for generations and has since appeared in virtually every standard edition of Mikra'os Gedolos. The Chasam Sofer writes: ”Minchas Shai is the work upon which all my Rabbeim relied, and it is an accepted and renowned authority among the sages of Sepharad.” (Shu”t Chasam Sofer, II, siman 270) Similarly, the Aruch HaShulchan writes: ”We follow the Minchas Shai, for his entire work was founded upon these principles, and he investigated them with great precision. All sofrim follow his rulings.” (Yoreh Deah 275:15)
