Printed at the beginning of the sefer are the tefillah of the Arizal to be recited before learning Torah, together with an additional tefillah to be said before the study of Kabbalah. The famed Slavuta press was founded in 1790 by Rabbi Moshe Shapiro , son of Rabbi Pinchas of Koritz . Refusing to derive personal benefit from his Torah stature, Rabbi Moshe established the printing house himself. He personally fashioned the Hebrew type used in the press, and tradition relates that he immersed the letters in a mikveh before they were first used. It is likewise recorded that he would proofread the pages of the Shas Erev Shabbos after returning from the mikveh. No secular or Haskalah works were ever printed at the Slavuta press, and even its workers were carefully chosen to be Yirei Hashem. For this reason, the sefarim printed there attained extraordinary esteem among generations of tzaddikim and chassidim, many of whom were particular to learn only from Slavuta editions. It is related that the Beis Avraham of Slonim said that learning from a Slavuta Shas is a segulah for yiras Shamayim. Rabbi Chaim Avraham Dov Ber HaKohen Levin, known as ”The Malach, ” likewise wrote: ”...They learned and davened only from the sefarim printed in Slavuta and Zhitomir, and from no others...”
