Chanukas HaBayis , a comprehensive exposition on the structure of the Beis HaMikdash , its gates, and its keilim, by the distinguished Italian chacham Rav Moshe Cheifetz of Venice . Venice, 1696. First edition. Issued together with the sefer is the extremely rare engraved foldout plan of the Beis HaMikdash, identifying its various sections and keilim by corresponding letters. Also present is the explanatory leaf keyed to the diagram. ”In the Future I Will Build the Beis HaMikdash” Among the Torah scholars of Italy during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, there was a remarkable emphasis on strengthening emunah in the coming of Mashiach and preparing for the rebuilding of the Beis HaMikdash through the study of its structure and keilim. One of the earliest examples is Rav Avraham HaRofeh of Mantua , whose Shiltei HaGibborim (1612) was devoted entirely to the keilim of the Beis HaMikdash. Such was the yearning for the Beis HaMikdash that even contemporary volumes of teshuvos printed in Italy often included engraved plans of the Beis HaMikdash, among them Shu”t Maharitatz (Venice, 1694) and Shu”t Darchei Noam (Venice, 1697). The present work, Chanukas HaBayis , stands as another important contribution to this treasured field of Torah study, examining every detail of the Beis HaMikdash and presenting its form in accordance with the views of the classic meforshim. Copy of the Celebrated Mohel of Frankfurt The title page bears the signature of Rav Binyamin Niederhofheim (1810–1885), one of the leading figures of Frankfurt's Orthodox community under Rav Shamshon Raphael Hirsch. A distinguished mohel, he performed more than 7,000 brissim and authored Sefer HaBris (Frankfurt, 1841) on the minhagim of bris milah. His home housed a private minyan that preserved the minhagim of Rav Nosson Adler zt”l, whose family he joined through marriage. The author, Rav Moshe ben Gershom Cheifetz (1664–1712), was one of the foremost Italian talmidei chachamim and poets of his generation. Born in Trieste, he later studied in Venice under Rav Shlomo Nizza, distinguished himself in both Torah and chochmah, and authored the classic works Chanukas HaBayis and Meleches Machsheves.
