She'eiris Yosef – Lunzer Copy - First Edition – Kraków, 1590 – Brother-in-Law of the Rema First edition of She'eiris Yosef, responsa and chiddushim on the Mordechai and Tur Choshen Mishpat by Rabbi Yosef Katz of Kraków, renowned posek and brother-in-law of the Rema , printed by Rabbi Yitzchak of Prostejov, Kraków, 1590. The author of She'eiris Yosef and the Rema served together on the famed Beis Din of Kraków. According to one tradition, the Rema married Kreindel, sister of Rabbi Yosef Katz; an alternate tradition records that both married daughters of Rabbi Moshe Auerlisch of Kraków. The two unnumbered leaves at the beginning of the sefer contain two responsa added after publication and are of exceptional rarity. On the title page appears the signature: ”Yechiel Dov Friedman, Av Beis Din of Nikel.” Rabbi Yosef Katz was counted among the leading poskim of his generation, and his sefer was praised by gedolei Yisrael. Rabbi Yosef Steinhardt of Fürth wrote of him: ”...the great and renowned gaon, whose name was known throughout distant lands... Rabbi Yosef Katz of Kraków, author of She'eiris Yosef, wherein he demonstrated his חריפות, בקיאות and extraordinary depth...” From the collection of Jack Lunzer, London.
