A Segulah for Extraordinary Wealth! – “Make It with Deep Pockets, So They Can Be Filled with Money” – The Personal White Vest of the Satmar Rebbe זי”ע A special white winter vest, worn by the Satmar Rebbe זי”ע for several years during the 1960s and custom-made especially for him in place of his regular white vest. Following his illness in 1968, the Rebbe no longer used it, and it was then presented as a gift to one of those close to his household. The Story Behind the Vest The sefarim room in the Rebbe’s home at 500 Bedford Avenue, where he sat day and night immersed in Torah and avodah, was not properly heated during the winter months. Cold air penetrated through the windows and the room was bitterly cold. When the Rebbetzin a”h saw that the cold was affecting the Rebbe’s health, she decided to have a warm garment made for him in the style of the vest he regularly wore. Since the Rebbe was careful not to wear wool, following the minhag of his forefathers, R’ Wolf Freund a”h, one of the Satmar Chassidim who owned a sweater factory, was called upon. He suggested making the vest from a material known as Orlon , which resembled wool in appearance. The Rebbe was not satisfied until it could be established that the material was indeed not wool. R’ Wolf therefore brought him a piece of Orlon together with a piece of wool, and the two were tested with fire. The wool singed rather than burning like an ordinary fabric, while the Orlon burned, thus establishing that it was not wool. Only then did the Rebbe agree to wear it. “So They Can Be Filled with Money” While the vest was being made, the Rebbe instructed R’ Wolf to fashion it in the same style as his special vest: two pockets below and a small pocket above on the left side for his tashen zeiger. Regarding the two lower pockets, the Rebbe specifically instructed that they be made large and deep , so that they could hold the money he kept for tzedakah, remarking in his characteristic manner: “מאַך טיפע טאַשן, מ’זאָל עס קענען אָנפילן מיט געלט.” “Make deep pockets, so they can be filled with money.” And indeed, the Rebbe kept considerable sums of money in these very pockets. As is well known, he had a special avodah in arranging and distributing money, keeping each type separate according to its particular purpose and his holy kavanos, taking great care not to mix one with another. Kvitlach brought before him were likewise kept in these pockets. The Words of a Tzaddik Endure Forever! And the holy words uttered by the Rebbe while this very vest was being made— “מאַך טיפע טאַשן, מ’זאָל עס קענען אָנפילן מיט געלט” “Make deep pockets, so they can be filled with money” —were not spoken for that moment alone. The words of a tzaddik endure for generations. What more fitting cheftza d’kedushah as a segulah to merit pockets filled with abundant wealth, shefa and brachah, and riches without measure, upon the very pockets of which the Rebbe’s holy words were uttered: “So they can be filled with money.”
