Hari Van Hoeffen '...Speakeasy' Mixed Media Sculpture
A Hari Van Hoeffen (American, 1905-1985) mixed media sculpture purportedly titled ‘Looking Back on the Age of Industrialism - Super Speakeasy' depicting an abstract architectural composition. Signed and dated '1981' on verso. Presented in a wooden frame. Hari Van Hoefen was a renowned architect, engineer, and artist based in St. Louis during the mid-20th century. He’s most known for his architectural designs and was a recipient of the American Institute of Architects Award in 1953 and 1957. His artwork was heavily influenced by his design experience, which included traditional, abstract, and art deco styles along with mixed media that fused paint, wood, plaster, and metal. Several of his pieces incorporate old, arcane medical instruments, which he welded into new shapes and characters. It’s not clear whether Van Hoefen was recognized for his fine art during his lifetime, as most of his pieces were kept in the family. He passed away in 1985 and passed down through descent to his grandson, who currently resides in Atlanta.
