British WWII Brass Maritime Cargo Lantern, 1939 - This maritime cargo lantern, identified as Cargo Light No. 3954, is a piece of British shipboard equipment from the early World War II period. The lantern is constructed with a rectangular brass frame containing four glass panels. Each panel is protected by two vertical brass guard rods. The upper housing features a sloped casing topped with a cylindrical ventilation chimney characterized by teardrop-shaped apertures and a domed cap. A rectangular brass identification plaque is riveted to the front of the sloped top, bearing the embossed inscription: CARGO LIGHT / NO. 3954 / GREAT BRITAIN / 1939. The lantern is equipped with a large wire swing handle for carrying and a smaller fixed ring at the apex. The interior contains a removable brass oil font complete with a circular wick burner. Two circular brackets are mounted on the side frame for securing the unit to a vessel's bulkhead or post.
