Elgin 13-Jewel Gold-Filled Hunter Sidewinder Watch - This is an antique hunter-case pocket watch manufactured by the Elgin National Watch Co., dating to approximately 1892 according to the movement serial number. The timepiece is arranged in a sidewinder configuration, where a movement designed for an open-face watch has been fitted into a hunting case, placing the winding crown at 3 o'clock and the subsidiary seconds dial at the 9 o'clock position. The yellow gold-filled case is decorated with intricate hand-engraved floral motifs and scrolling foliate patterns on both the front and back covers. The interior of the back case is stamped with a diamond-shaped mark reading GUARANTEED TO WEAR 20 YEARS and bears the case serial number 913997. The inner dust cover, or cuvette, is hand-engraved with the name W.B. Merritt. The white enamel dial features black Roman numeral hour markers, blued steel spade-style hands, and a sunken subsidiary seconds dial. The dial is signed ELGIN within a decorative cartouche.
