Blue & White Spongeware Stoneware Banded Pitcher - A crack and chip on bottom. This bulbous stoneware pitcher features a traditional blue spongeware or spatterware decoration over a cream-colored ground. The vessel is constructed with a flared, pinched spout and a single loop handle, set upon a raised pedestal base. The decoration includes a mottled sponge-applied blue glaze covering the upper and lower portions of the body, with two solid cobalt blue horizontal bands encircling the midsection. The interior of the pitcher is finished with a clear glaze. The base is unmarked, showing only slight discoloration and kiln markings. This piece is characteristic of American folk pottery from the 19th or early 20th century.
