19th C. Rockingham-Style Snuff Taker Toby Jug - This Toby jug is an earthenware vessel designed in the form of a standing figure, historically known as The Snuff Taker. The piece depicts a stout male figure in 18th-century clothing, wearing a tricorn hat that serves as the rim and pouring spout. The figure is clad in a long frock coat and waistcoat, posed as if taking a pinch of snuff from his hand. The item is finished with a high-gloss, mottled brown and cream tortoiseshell lead glaze, characteristic of Rockingham or Bennington style pottery. A curved, branch-like handle is attached to the rear of the figure. The underside of the base is fully glazed with a yellowish-tan hue appearing through the thinner application of the lead glaze. No factory marks or signatures are visible on the base or body of the item.
