Hand-Appliqued Sunbonnet Sue Quilt - 84 x 96 This vintage American hand-stitched applique quilt features the traditional Sunbonnet Sue pattern, also known as Dutch Doll. The quilt is composed of twenty-five individual blocks arranged in a five-by-five grid. Each block contains a stylized figure of a girl in a large bonnet, rendered in various cotton fabrics including solids, ginghams, and calico prints. These figures are hand-appliqued to a mustard-yellow cotton ground using a decorative black blanket or buttonhole stitch. Hand-embroidered floral accents in multi-colored thread are visible on several of the bonnets. The blocks are separated by dark olive-green floral print sashing. The entire piece is extensively hand-quilted with patterns including diamond grids, concentric arcs, and stylized floral motifs, which are also visible on the solid mustard-yellow reverse. The quilt is finished with a narrow, hand-applied black fabric binding.
