Mid-C. American Hand-Quilted Medallion Scrap Quilt - 68 x 86 This vintage handmade pieced quilt is designed in a concentric square or medallion pattern, a style often associated with the utilitarian and improvisational quilting traditions of the American South. The quilt is strip-pieced using a diverse array of fabric remnants, including solid-colored cottons and various printed textiles such as a tan fabric with green botanical motifs, red and blue stripes, and small-scale florals. The composition radiates from a central blue core through successive borders of yellow, green, lavender, brown, light blue, red, and mint green. The reverse side is finished with a solid cream-colored fabric. The entire surface is hand-quilted in a repeating chevron or V-stitch pattern. The improvisational layout and construction techniques are highly characteristic of the style produced by the Gee's Bend quiltmakers and the Freedom Quilting Bee.
