Antique German Scholar's Companion Patriotic Lithographed Wooden Pencil Box - 8.5in long This is an antique Scholar's Companion wooden school supply box, manufactured in Germany for the United States market during the late 19th or early 20th century. The box is constructed of softwood and features a multi-color lithographed paper label applied to the lid. The graphic motif includes a bald eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, an American flag, a shield with stars and stripes, a maritime anchor, a globe, and a wooden chest. A banner on the left side reads SCHOLAR'S COMPANION and the bottom right corner is marked MADE IN GERMANY. The box is secured with two brass hinges and features a scalloped iron lock plate on the front. The interior consists of a single compartment with one wooden divider. The underside of the lid retains multiple markings, including a circular black ink stamp for DR. ARTHUR C. GEORGE of Mechanicstown, Md., a circular red ink stamp featuring a schoolhouse illustration, and a handwritten pencil inscription for Grace George. The reference to Mechanicstown, Maryland, provides historical context as the town was renamed Thurmont in 1894.
