A Group of World War I US Army Medals and Photograph Attributed to John J. Gallagher - This collection comprises a World War I-era United States Army medal grouping and an associated portrait photograph identified to John J. Gallagher. The grouping includes a named Purple Heart medal featuring a gold-toned profile of George Washington against a purple enamel background. Number on side reads 24584. The reverse is engraved with the text FOR MILITARY MERIT and the name JOHN J. GALLAGHER. It is suspended from a purple and white silk ribbon and is accompanied by a matching service ribbon bar. Also included is a bronze World War I Victory Medal featuring a winged figure of Victory on the obverse and the inscription THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION on the reverse. The rainbow-colored ribbon is fitted with five bronze battle clasps: AISNE, AISNE-MARNE, ST. MIHIEL, MEUSE-ARGONNE, and DEFENSIVE SECTOR. The third medal is a French Croix de Guerre with the dates 1914 1918 on the reverse. Its green and red striped ribbon features a bronze palm attachment. The group is completed by a black and white studio portrait photograph of a soldier wearing a World War I-pattern tunic with a standing collar and a Montana peak campaign hat. The items are presented in a black display case with a white interior.
