Japanese Carved & Gilded Okina Noh Mask - 5x3. This Japanese decorative mask depicts the character Okina, the auspicious old man from traditional Noh theater, a figure symbolizing longevity and peace. The mask features characteristic squinted eyes, a wide smile, and deeply carved wrinkles. Two circular sunburst motifs are prominently positioned on the forehead to represent brow tufts. The piece is finished with a weathered metallic gold-tone wash applied over a dark brown base. Visual evidence from chips along the goatee and outer edges reveals a light-colored substrate, indicating the mask is constructed from carved wood or a molded composite material. The reverse side is finished with a dark, matte coating and retains a twisted hanging cord. A small, illegible paper label fragment is adhered to the lower interior.
