The crate is constructed of wood panels with finger-jointed corners. The front panel features black stenciled text reading 144 BOXES, NO. 5, a large stylized A & P logo, HIGH GRADE MATCHES, THE GREAT ATLANTIC & PACIFIC TEA CO, and U.S.A. The side panels contain regulatory markings including I.C.C.-6 and STRIKE ANYWHERE MATCHES, accompanied by a diamond-shaped caution warning and the stamped serial number 28283. The interior is empty. A white string tag is attached to one corner.
