Locke (Nasby) Toledo Blade Scrapbook - A collection of historical ephemera and a mid-19th-century octavo-sized account book utilized as a scrapbook. The book features marbled paper boards and a leather spine, with an interior front cover inscription reading J. E. Oliphant Fredericksburg 1849. A later manuscript note on yellow lined paper is affixed to the front cover, identifying the contents as a series of newspaper articles written for the Toledo Blade in 1867-1868 by a reporter named Nasby and referring to them as the Masby papers concerning the Civil War area. The interior contains numerous contemporary newspaper clippings of satirical political columns by David Ross Locke under his pseudonym Petroleum V. Nasby, with datelines including Washington, D. C., March 15 and Post Offis, Confedrit X Roads, January 8, 1866. The accompanying ephemera includes several personal letters and envelopes addressed to Miss Alma Helmling of 261 Pratt Street, Ravenna, Ohio. These items bear postmarks from Cuyahoga Falls and Ravenna, Ohio, dated 1937 and 1938. One handwritten letter provides military context, referencing the Pacific and European theaters of World War II. The lot also includes a group of postcards featuring industrial views of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Co. Youngstown Works and Republic Steel Corporation in Youngstown, Ohio, alongside nature scenes and holiday greeting cards. A single newspaper clipping contains a death notice for Wesley Rader, a Civil War veteran from Greencastle.
