Honore Daumier Notre Dame Oil on Panel - 28x24 Honore Daumier (French, 1808-1879), Notre Dame de Paris. This oil on panel painting depicts a quintessential Parisian scene, featuring the twin towers of Notre Dame Cathedral rising in the background beyond a bustling bridge. The composition is divided horizontally by the bridge, below which figures, including a fisherman in a wide-brimmed hat and a seated companion, occupy the riverbank. The work is executed in an atmospheric, tonalist style with muted earth tones and shows a textured application of paint. The painting is housed in an elaborate late 19th-century frame of dark-stained oak with deep-carved floral and foliate corners and an inner brass-toned repousse fillet featuring a repeating clover motif. The verso reveals a vertically-joined wooden panel support with handwritten characters in pencil that appear to be R 205 or P 205.
