B.H. Wood, Modernistic Chess Set, mid-20th Century - This lot features a complete thirty-two piece chess set including a folding competition-style board distributed by B.H. Wood’s chess supply company. The board is constructed from a green and cream chequered vinyl with a fabric backing and is clearly stamped along the edge with the mark CHESS, SUTTON COLDFIELD. The accompanying pieces are hand-carved from natural stone, likely onyx or alabaster, and exhibit a distinctive modernistic and geometric design that departs from the traditional Staunton pattern. The set comprises sixteen translucent off-white pieces and sixteen dark grey stone pieces. No original box is present.
