A RARE VENETIAN CEREMONIAL BREASTPLATE
Finely handwrought of steel in 16th century style, with rolled and roped borders studded with decorative rivets and raised panel to the upper breast with cusped center. Superbly embossed and engraved in high relief with the haloed Lion of Venice holding St. Mark’s Gospel, above the coat of arms of the Barbarigo family with the ducal cap above and supported by two lions rampant. Likely worn in the procession on the Festa della Sensa, celebrated in Venice on Ascension Day each year since May 9, 1000. 19th century or later. Two members of the Barbarigo family served as Doges of Venice. By tradition, the founder of the family, Arrigo, won a battle against Saracen pirates in 880 c.e and returned home with six of their beards; these became the family crest. Minor rubbing. Overall height 50cm. Condition II
