Michele Barbe’s YGGDRASILL-61 (1991) takes its name from the mythological World Tree of Norse cosmology — the axis linking heaven, earth, and the underworld. Through layered pigment, texture, and gesture, Barbe transforms this ancient symbol into an abstract field of energy and movement. Ochre, indigo, and crimson tones converge in a surface that feels at once geological and cosmic. Executed in mixed media on canvas, the work oscillates between painterly freedom and structural tension. Barbe’s process is deeply physical, almost sculptural — pigment is built, scraped, and reworked, allowing colour to breathe through texture. Organic central forms emerge and dissolve into surrounding marks, evoking creation and decay in perpetual dialogue. YGGDRASILL-61 becomes a meditation on continuity and transformation. Barbe’s synthesis of mythology and material process embodies the idea of connection — every gesture, like every root and branch of the cosmic tree, partakes in the eternal rhythm of becoming.
