ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON MOTHER OF GOD THE MILKGIVER - An antique Russian Orthodox icon of Mother of God with Jesus Child. Dated 19th century. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board with gilding. The icon represents Virgin Mary breastfeeding Jesus. Four saints are depicted on the kovcheg. Titled in Church Slavonic. This iconography emerged in 3rd century in the Roman catacombs, yet it only became widespread in Russian icon painting in the 16th-17th centuries.
