ANTIQUE 19TH C RUSSIAN BRONZE ICON VIRGIN OF TIKHVIN - An antique Russian Orthodox icon of Mother of God with Jesus Child in Tikhvinskaya iconography. Dated 19th century. Cast bronze with blue and white enamel accents. The central image is surrounded with medallions of half length Deesis and selected saints among floral and foliage ornaments. Theotokos of Tikhvin is one of the most celebrated Orthodox Christian icons that is said to be one of the icons written by St. Luke the Evangelist. Since the 14th century, the icon was held in Tikhvin, where eventually Tikhvin Assumption Monastery was founded to host the icon. Keywords: Metalwork, Religious Items, Christian Art, Collectibles.
