NIKOLAI SVERCHKOV HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPH ST. PETERSBURG - An engaging antique hand-colored lithograph by the celebrated Russian equestrian and genre painter Nikolai Egorovich Sverchkov (1817–1898). This lively 1840s scene depicts an elegant, four-horse open carriage speeding across a dusty plaza. The carriage is driven by a bearded coachman and a postilion rider, carrying two finely dressed women in bonnets, with two liveried footmen standing at the rear. In the background stands the unmistakable neoclassical facade and soaring golden spire of the Admiralty building in St. Petersburg. The print is signed and dated in Cyrillic ”Н Сверчков 1843” (N. Sverchkov 1843) in the lower right corner. The paper exhibits significant age-related wear, including overall toning, edge darkening (mat burn), and scattered foxing. The reverse shows visible water stains and generalized discoloration. Despite the paper's aging, the hand-applied watercolor tinting remains remarkably vivid.
