ATTR TO SAM FRANCIS AMERICAN ABSTRACT OIL PAINTING - Attributed to Sam Francis (American, 1923–1994). Oil painting on board. Abstract Expressionist composition. Signed on the backside. Undated. Framed. Samuel Lewis Francis was born in San Mateo, California. His first works were influenced by the Abstract Expressionism of Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky, and Clyfford Still. However, he quickly developed his own colorful abstract style after moving to Paris in 1950. Francis returned to California in 1962, settling at first in Santa Barbara and then establishing a studio in Venice, Santa Monica in 1963.
