LARGE 19TH C. RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON OF SELECTED SAINTS - A large and beautifully detailed 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon, hand-painted in egg tempera and gesso on a traditional solid wood panel. Executed in a warm, provincial style, the icon is divided into three registers featuring highly venerated figures. Top Register: The Kazanskaya (Our Lady of Kazan) Mother of God, The Resurrection (Descent into Hades), and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Middle Register: Six standing saints, including St. Nikita, St. Paul (Pavel), St. Peter (Petr), and St. Cyril (Kirill). Bottom Register: St. George Slaying the Dragon, the martyred sisters Saints Faith, Hope, and Charity (Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov), and St. Alexander. The measurements are approximate. Condition Very good antique condition. The wood panel shows a natural, age-appropriate convex bow. The egg tempera painted surface is stable with rich colors, showing minor craquelure, light edge wear, and surface abrasions consistent with age. The reverse retains its original inset splines (shponki).
