RUSSIAN 84 SILVER OKLAD ICON OF THE TIKHVIN MOTHER OF GOD - A beautiful 19th-century late Imperial Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Tikhvin Mother of God (Tikhvinskaya). Visible through the cutouts of the silver cover, the traditional painted composition shows the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, who is depicted with his right sole characteristically exposed. The icon is overlaid with a striking, solid 84-zolotnik silver oklad (riza). The silverwork features a highly detailed, engine-turned guilloché background complemented by elaborate bright-cut engraving on the garments and intricate foliate borders. The lower margin bears the engraved Cyrillic title of the icon. The silver is clearly hallmarked on the lower edge with the 1899–1908 Russian left-facing Kokoshnik mark alongside the 84 standard mark and a Cyrillic maker's mark (СГ). The solid silver oklad retains a bright finish with crisp, well-preserved engraving and minor, age-appropriate surface wear. The visible painted elements (faces and hands) are stable. The icon has been secured within a later wooden frame with a velvet-lined backing board for modern display. Not examined outside of the frame.
