1872 IMPERIAL RUSSIAN SILVER GILT PAN-SLAVIC SALT THRONE - A fine Imperial Russian 84-standard silver-gilt salt throne (solonka), Moscow, dated 1872. Executed in the traditional Pan-Slavic (Russian Revival) style, the cellar is modeled as a stylized peasant chair entirely decorated with bright-cut geometric motifs. The hinged seat/lid is engraved with the traditional Cyrillic hospitality proverb, ”Without salt, without bread, half a dinner.” The interior of the lid reveals a charming engraved cockerel. Marks: Fully hallmarked to the underside and lid with the 84 zolotnik standard, Moscow city mark, assayer's mark of Viktor Savinkov (B.C / 1872), and maker's initials ”ИАС”. It also bears a later Soviet 875 re-assay mark.
