LEV MESHBERG LOBSTER MIXED MEDIA BAS-RELIEF ON BOARD, 1984 - A monumental and highly tactile mixed media painting by Ukrainian-American artist Lev Meshberg. Titled ”Lobster” and executed in 1984, the large-scale work (36” x 24”) showcases the artist's signature bas-relief technique. By building up thick layers of pigment, wax, and modeling paste, Meshberg renders the crustacean almost like an ancient fossil embedded in stone. The subject is framed by a painted architectural archway in a muted, dreamlike palette of greys, whites, and earthy ochres. Marks: Signed and dated ”LEV MESHBERG 84” in the lower right. Provenance: Janakos Antiques, CA (circa 2019); numerous previous auction/gallery inventory tags to the reverse; Collection of Edward Khodorkovsky. lev meshberg painting, sculptural painting, bas relief art, contemporary russian american art, textured marine life art.
