MIKHAIL TARKHANOV ABSTRACT COMPOSITION PAINTING, 1935 - A rare, subversive mid-century abstract composition by Russian avant-garde artist Mikhail Mikhailovich Tarkhanov. Executed in 1935—three years after the Soviet state banned abstract art—this secret work is created using an experimental oil-water emulsion technique on paper, resulting in a complex, mottled, biomorphic texture with vibrant flashes of pink, yellow, and green emerging from dark shadows. Tarkhanov, a student of Kandinsky at VKhUTEMAS, is held in the permanent collections of the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum. Marks: Signed and dated ”M. Tarkhanov 1935” (in Cyrillic) on the verso. Complete with modern archival framing and a brass nameplate.
