LEONID SOKOV SPRINGTIME ACRYLIC PAINTING ON PAPER, 1992 - A monumental, subversive, and highly humorous work by Sots Art founder Leonid Sokov. Titled ”Springtime” (1992), the piece features a naively rendered nude female figure positioned on all fours amidst a field of green and red poppies. The lower margin features the Cyrillic text: ”СРЕДИ ДОЛИН, ПОКРЫТЫХ МАКОМ, / ХУДОЖНИК СТАВИТ ДЕВУ В ПОЗУ...”—the setup to a classic, bawdy Russian folklore rhyme, which the painting itself serves as the visual punchline for. The work perfectly encapsulates Sokov's signature blending of crude folklore with anti-academic, pop-art sensibilities. Marks: Signed and dated ”1992” in the lower right.
