NICKOLAY BELOUS BABUSHKA ACRYLIC PAINTING 2008 - A striking, large-scale contemporary acrylic painting by prominent Ukrainian artist Nickolay (Mykola) Belous (b. 1956). Titled ”Babushka” (2008), the composition features an elderly woman in a traditional headscarf surrounded by secondary figures. Belous subverts the traditional subject matter by employing his signature ”color blocking” technique, rendering the figures' faces and hands in shocking, non-naturalistic hot pink against fields of lime green, lavender, and ochre. The result is a highly graphic, cinematic image that bridges Soviet poster art with Western Pop Art. Marks: Dated ”2008” in white pigment along the upper and lower margins. Provenance: Bears a collection/exhibition label from the Denison Museum (Granville, Ohio) on the reverse. nickolay belous painting, contemporary ukrainian art, pop art portrait, mykola belous, denison museum provenance.
