ALPHONSE GIROUX FRENCH GOUACHE PORTRAIT PAINTING OF A MAIDEN - A beautifully executed 19th-century French gouache on canvas portrait of a young maiden. The romantic composition features the subject draped in a soft white classical gown, adorned with a floral and leaf headdress, gently holding tall green reeds. While the painting is unsigned, the reverse of the canvas bears the prominent stencil stamp of the prestigious Parisian luxury retailer and art supplier ”Maison Alph. Giroux, 43 Boul. des Capucines.” The green backing board features a handwritten inscription dating the piece to ”24 Decembre 1871.” The artwork is presented under glass in its spectacular original oval giltwood frame, crowned with a heavily carved, ribbon-tied bow crest. Established in 1799, Maison Alphonse Giroux was a celebrated Parisian purveyor of luxury goods, fine artwork, and cabinetmaking. The firm was patronized by French royalty, including Emperor Napoleon III, and famously manufactured the first commercially produced daguerreotype cameras.
