RUSSIAN IMPERIAL SILVER FILIGREE SALT THRONE CHAIR - This large 19th-century Russian silver salt throne (soloncha) is a quintessential example of Slavic decorative art, featuring an architectural chair-form design with an elaborate pierced filigree backrest. The backrest is intricately worked with scrolling floral motifs and a central circular medallion, while the hinged seat opens to reveal a spacious gilt-washed interior reservoir. The base is expertly hallmarked with the ”84” zolotnik silver standard, the Moscow city mark of Saint George and the Dragon, and the maker's mark ”А.И” for Andrei Ivanov, a noted Moscow silversmith. It also bears the assay master mark ”Л.О” for Lev Fedorovich Oleks, dated 1896. This substantial piece, weighing 110 grams, rests on a stepped ”zigzag” base and exemplifies the traditional Russian custom of greeting honored guests with bread and salt.
