R. JORGENSEN AMERICAN ANCIENT FIGURES OIL PAINTING 1953 - This mid-century Abstract Expressionist oil on canvas painting by American artist R. Jorgensen, titled Ancient Figures, dates to 1953. Executed with active, gestural brushwork, the composition features sweeping calligraphic forms in tones of slate grey, charcoal, and white layered over vibrant under-passages of lime green, turquoise, ochre, and vermilion red. The work is signed and dated ”Jorgensen '53” at the lower right. The reverse of the raw canvas is signed ”R. Jorgensen, ” inscribed with the date ”1953,” the dimensions ”28 x 32,” and titled ”ANCIENT FIGURES.” The wooden stretcher bar features a stamped mark reading ”Wm. H. The canvas remains unlined on its original wooden stretcher. Frame displays light surface scuffs, wear along edges, and paper tape remnants. Verso shows canvas toning, handwritten inscriptions, and light oxidation on stretcher hardware.
