HENRY SMYTH 19TH C ENGLISH COASTAL LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING - Henry Smyth (British, 1800–1873), 19th-century romantic coastal landscape, oil on canvas. Depicting a grand fortified castle perched atop a steep rocky cliff overlooking a bay with sailing vessels, while travellers traverse a stone arched bridge along a dirt pathway in the foreground. Signed ”H. SMYTH” in dark paint in the lower right corner. The reverse reveals an authentic period stretcher and frame lined with English newspaper tape bearing an 1872 date stamp. Housed in an elaborate molded gilt composition frame. Victorian, artwork, sea, view, ocean, seascape, fineart, picture, marine, antique. Dimensions Frame: 29 1/2 x 25 1/2 in. Canvas: 21 x 17 in. Condition Good overall condition. The oil on canvas surface displays fine, age-appropriate craquelure and light surface dust. The canvas remains stable and well-tensioned on its wooden stretcher. The reverse exhibits minor discoloration and edge wear to the lining paper. The ornate gilt frame shows light surface wear and minor cracking along the molded corner decorations.
