Unmarked. Ercole Barovier (Italian, 1889–1974) is one of the most important figures in Murano glass of the 20th century. At the age of 30 he became a partner in his father's company, Vetreria Artistica Barovier & C. He became sole proprietor in 1936 and renamed the company to Barovier & Toso in 1942 where he maintained artistic direction until 1972. Over the course of his 50-years there, Barovier invented numerous techniques which contributed significantly to the resurgence of Murano art glass. The Rostrato technique, one of the most complex in Venetian glass, involves manually applying molten glass points to the surface of the vase, creating a sculptural texture that catches and refracts light.
