LARGE 19TH C FRENCH BISQUE PORCELAIN MUSE OF MUSIC H. MOREAU - A monumental antique French bisque (unglazed) porcelain figural sculpture by celebrated French artist Hippolyte François Moreau (1832–1927). The classical composition depicts a beautifully draped young woman, likely an allegory of the Muse of Music, seated thoughtfully on a plinth with a detailed sheet of music resting in her lap. The matte white porcelain masterfully mimics the appearance of finely carved statuary marble. The side of the plinth bears the incised signature ”H. Moreau” positioned directly above an incised interlaced double-L Sèvres mark. A massive and highly detailed example of 19th-century French Neoclassical decorative arts. hippolyte moreau, bisque porcelain, biscuit porcelain, sevres mark, antique french porcelain, muse of music, classical sculpture, figural group... Dimensions 23 3/4 x 9 x 9 in. The measurements are approximate. Condition Very good antique condition. The delicate bisque porcelain is incredibly well-preserved with no obvious chips, cracks, or restorations visible to the fingers or sheet music. The matte surface shows minor, age-appropriate surface dust and light handling marks that would benefit from a gentle cleaning.
