This book is published on the occasion of an International Conference on the Packing and Transportation of Paintings (London, September 1991), jointly organized and co-hosted by the Canadian Conservation Institute of Communications, Ottawa, the Conservation Analytical Laboratory of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and the Tate Gallery in London. Special exhibitions offer innumerable unique opportunities. These include the opportunity for the expert to compare works separated for decades or even centuries, and the cultural experience enjoyed by visitors who might never otherwise be able to visit all the individual private collections and museums lending the works of art assembled.
