Thanks to a wide selection of works from the world's leading museums (among others, the excavations at Pompeii and the Archaeological Museum of Naples, the Vatican Museums, the Palazzo Massimo headquarters of the Roman National Museum, the Louvre in Paris, the British Museum in London, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the archaeological museums of Munich, Frankfurt, Zurich), the exhibition explored individual fragments of frescoes, paintings on wood or glass, attempting to measure, based on artistic methods, compositions, objects, the formal level at which painting occurred in the Roman world, from the first century BC to the thresholds of Late Antiquity and the Byzantine era. The essays in the catalogue are written by eminent scholars from different fields of science to maximise the topic of study. The topics highlighted by this exhibition are interesting, such as the construction of pictorial spaces according to canons, as is clearly seen in the case of landscape views, in which distance is emphasised over the system of linear perspective that is now familiar to us; or The Permanence of Memory from Fayyum's portraits to the first Christian icons of Sinai; as well as analyses of the processes, techniques, and traditions of the workshop.
