This miniature was created by Sofya Mikhailovna Golikova (1928–2019), a representative of the renowned Golikov artistic dynasty of Palekh, whose members played a significant role in the development of the Palekh lacquer miniature tradition throughout the twentieth century. Created during the artist's later period, Berry Gathering reflects one of the most lyrical themes in Russian folk art. The composition celebrates the harmony between people and nature, continuing the poetic interpretation of rural life that has long been a hallmark of the Palekh school. Set against a deep black lacquer ground, the composition depicts a young woman in traditional festive costume carrying freshly gathered berries and wild herbs. Her graceful figure is enclosed within an oval medallion framed by an elaborate floral border. Cornflowers, daisies, ears of wheat, and stylised foliage are rendered with exceptional precision and enriched with delicate raised gold decoration. The restrained yet harmonious palette, elegant linear drawing, and meticulous attention to detail lend the composition an intimate, lyrical quality. The ornamental border surrounding the body of the box completes the design, preserving the finest traditions of Palekh lacquer miniature painting.
