This work represents a mature version of the artist’s epic cycle. A large-scale panel depicting the epic tale of Prince Volga and Mikula Selyaninovich, one of the central narratives of Russian folklore. The composition is structured around a contrast of scale and meaning. The figure of Mikula dominates the left side, embodying strength and creative power through a monumental, stable presence. Volga and his retinue are positioned to the right and center, rendered in a more fragmented rhythm. This contrast enhances the narrative tension and emphasizes the central figure. The landscape is arranged in the traditional Palekh manner with stylized hills, architectural elements, and decorative vegetation. The palette combines red, ochre, and green tones against a dark ground.
