A large-scale linear study revealing the construction of one of the artist’s key narrative compositions. The drawing presents a complex multi-figure scene centered on the encounter between Mikula Selyaninovich and Prince Volga with his retinue. The composition is already fully structured at this stage, with clear distribution of figures and directional movement. Executed in a confident and precise line, the work emphasizes rhythm and dynamics. The movement of horses and figures creates a strong sense of internal energy, forming the basis of the composition. Although executed without color, the drawing includes detailed indications of armor, landscape elements, and architectural forms. It clearly demonstrates the spatial logic and scale of the intended final work. This study offers insight into the artist’s method, where composition is constructed through line and rhythm before the application of decorative and color layers. Collecting & Investment Potential: Preparatory studies for monumental works by Nikolai Ivanovich Golikov are exceptionally rare. They are valued for documenting the creative process, revealing compositional structure and their independent artistic merit. The large format further enhances the importance of this work.
