A rare example of early Palekh lacquer painting by Ivan Konstantinovich Myznikov (1871–1961), a hereditary icon painter and miniature artist whose career bridged the traditions of Russian icon painting and the emergence of Palekh lacquer miniature in the early twentieth century. Myznikov received his artistic training in the traditional icon-painting workshops of the Belousov brothers before working from 1885 in the Moscow icon workshop of I.F. Yerzunov. He later became a member of the Palekh Artel of Ancient Painting, joining the generation of artists who successfully transformed centuries-old icon-painting techniques into the new medium of lacquer miniature. Boy with a Rattle presents an unusually intimate domestic subject for the early Palekh period. The young child, holding a traditional rattle, is portrayed with remarkable warmth and psychological sensitivity. The delicately modelled face, gentle expression, and carefully observed folds of the clothing demonstrate the artist's exceptional command of tempera painting and his solid academic and icon-painting background.
